LGBTQ seniors fear discrimination when searching for housing – PBS Newshour

Many LGBTQ+ seniors who live in long-term care communities and senior housing are fearful of being mistreated, refused care, neglected, or abused—with some even re-closeting themselves for safety. In many states, it’s still legal to deny access to housing and public resources, and few long-term care facilities have policies to protect residents based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

NewsHour Weekend’s Ivette Feliciano reports.

GenPride and Community Roots Housing are building Seattle’s first affordable housing project designed to be an affirming environment for LGBTQIA+ seniors. The project will provide 118 apartments, with a mix of studios and 1-bedroom units – as well as a community and health services center.

GenPride will be the ground-floor anchor tenant at Pride Place. We have exciting plans to provide specialized programs and services to both the residents and others throughout King County. Each year I participated in the Pride Run, it featured high-energy fields, festive costumes, and a relatively late start that helpfully accommodates Friday night shenanigans.
