February at GenPride: Love & Embracing Elderhood
|
This month, we’re celebrating Love & Embracing Elderhood—a time to honor the deep connections, resilience, and wisdom that come with aging in our LGBTQ+ community. Love takes many forms—self-love, friendship, romance, and the care we show one another. And embracing elderhood means recognizing the beauty in our journeys, valuing our stories, and lifting up the voices of those who paved the way.
Throughout February, we’ll feature articles from our writers exploring these themes—stories of love at every stage of life, reflections on aging with pride, and conversations on how we can continue to support and celebrate one another.

GenPride: Showing Love Through
Nutrition and Connection
By Laney Williams
At GenPride, everything we do is centered on love and embracing the LGBTQ+ elder community. In February, we thought it would be fitting to focus on community members who shine brightly with the love they bring to our mission.

The GenPride Center serves hot lunch every Tuesday and Thursday as well as a monthly BIPOC lunch. Chef Chanda Martin (she/her) came to us through a partner organization, Sound Generations, where she is Chef Lead of the Community Dining program. Planning and preparing meals for GenPride lunches, as well as working closely with volunteers and ensuring nutrition and hygiene are but a few of Chanda’s tasks, and she loves the work.
Chanda explains the importance of these programs, “I connect strongly with spreading love and embracing elderhood by providing nutritious shared meals and fostering a sense of community which addresses both the physical and emotional well-being of older adults. In a society where loneliness is prevalent, especially among the elderly, I hope these efforts offer more than just sustenance and that they provide a platform for connection, belonging, and a cornerstone for building community”.
It takes hard work and dedication to keep the GenPride lunch program going and Chanda makes it clear that she doesn’t do it alone. “I have tremendous gratitude for the VOLUNTEERS who support every Hot Lunch we serve at GenPride. These amazing and dedicated volunteers have assisted the growth from serving 25 meals in April 2024 to over 50 meals at each service today”.
Both the Hot Lunch program and the BIPOC Lunch program are about more than nutrition, they’re about building community and spending quality time with like-minded elders. “Serving the elder LGBTQ+ community is both an honor and a responsibility, offering a chance to address discrimination, celebrate resilience, learn from their experience, and contribute to a more inclusive society”.

Celebrate Black History Month in Seattle
February is also Black History Month, a time to honor and celebrate the rich cultural contributions, resilience, and achievements of Black communities. This year, Seattle is hosting a variety of events, exhibits, and activities where you can immerse yourself in Black history and support Black-led initiatives. Here are some highlights to check out:
Explore Black History Through Museums & Art Exhibits:
-
Call to Conscience Black History Museum – Hosted by Rainier Avenue Radio, this pop-up museum at the Columbia City Theater will be open throughout February, showcasing exhibits on the Seattle Black Panther Party, the founders of Ezell’s Famous Chicken, and more. More Info

Community Resources & Support:
We also want to highlight some of our community partners who are making an impact in Black communities year-round:
-
Lavender Rights Project – This organization is dedicated to elevating the power and leadership of the Black intersex and gender-diverse community through legal and social services. Learn More
-
POCAAN (People of Color Against AIDS Network) – A multicultural, multi-social service agency working to address disparities affecting marginalized communities in Seattle and King County. Learn More
Support Black-Owned Businesses:
Another impactful way to celebrate Black History Month is by supporting Black-owned businesses in our community. Check out the Urban League’s Black Business Directory, which features a comprehensive list of Black-owned businesses in Seattle and beyond. From restaurants and retail to professional services, your support helps strengthen and sustain these businesses. Explore the Directory
This Black History Month, we encourage you to engage, learn, and support Black voices in our community. Whether it’s visiting a museum, attending an event, or supporting local Black-led organizations, every effort contributes to a more inclusive and informed society.
Stay connected and celebrate with us!
