May Movie Club: The Wedding Banquet (online)

May 26, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm PDT

Free

In honor of Seattle’s Pride Asia Festival on Sunday, May 28, kick off your Memorial Day Weekend with GenPride’s Movie Club and our Friday online showing of The Wedding Banquet, one of the early movies from award-winning, master director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Life of Pi).

This 1993 comedy of errors and expectations depicts an Asian American man who marries a mainland Chinese woman in the U.S., both to get her a green card and to placate his parents in Taiwan. Complications abound, however, when his parents suddenly arrive in America to plan an extravagant wedding banquet and the groom has to hide his true relationship with his long-term gay partner.

“Never patronizing his characters, Ang Lee combines comedy, both subtle and raucous, with acute social asides.” – TIME OUT Magazine
